One of the more interesting mushrooms that grows near me. The orange color comes from a parasitic ascomycete fungus that grows on the host mushroom. This guy is edible, but I was trail riding so I didn’t harvest.

      If you look for the post prior to mine of the Russula brevipes mushroom, that’s how big this was as that was likely the host species that was parasitized. It was about the size of my hand.

    That looks great! They’re almost always buried completely under leaf litter around me, must be nice to find one without digging!

      The last few years I’ve had a ton of luck finding them on the side of trails. Last year was miraculous. No joke for about a half mile there was at least a hundred as large as this one.
