Should I worry that my ladygoblin might be trying to poison me?
Eats handful of berries.
Not bad!
How do you identify nightshade vs other things-with-leaves?
Do you die after eating the berries? It might be a nightshade. Do they taste good and not kill you? It might also be a nightshade. Wiki link
I asked her this and she just looked at me like I was unwilling to be poisoned.
Eat some and see if you’re smoking phantom cigarettes and seeing your dead friends in the room?
You can tell by the way it is.
But for reals: this looks like a Black Nightshade.
- Plant height up to 24” (at least the ones in my garden); small with slender branching stems, like a bush bean.
- Broad leaves
- Little white flowers on little clusters of stems which droop like that when they turn into berries
- When ripe, the berries turn black, less poisonous and tasty (please don’t just take my word for it 😂).
Not not to be confused with Bittersweet Nightshade (vining plant, red berries) and Deadly Nightshade (Belladonna: individual black berries, not clusters)
I went down a rabbit hole a couple weeks ago looking up various nightshades, and I found it incredibly funny that nobody was willing to say that black nightshade’s not poisonous. Like, there haven’t been many deaths ever reported, there are historical examples of people consuming it, people today claim to have safely consumed it, but something about it just doesn’t feel right.
That said, please don’t eat it, even if it’s not lethal, the effects it produces seem just terrible.
Mmmm tiny danger tomatoes.
Potentially also tiny danger potatoes underground.
Fun fact you can graft tomato plants on to potato root system and get both.
