Seriously though, why hasn’t nearsightedness been fixed by evolution yet. It seems like a simple thing to fix (just make the eyeball a bit shorter) and a huge evolutionary disadvantage if you can’t distinguish a gnu running away from a sabretooth running towards you.

Because nearsighted people fuck.
Evolution doesn’t optimize us for maximum efficiency. It just weeds out the genes that aren’t passed on.
In fact, since gneese and teeth sabre stopped being a major concern and staring at things close to us has become essential to survival, progressively MORE of us have become nearsighted both literally and figuratively.
Seems like the eye was fine until humans stopped getting as much light in their day as they used to. Myopia is on the rise, and studies indicate that the eye tends to elongate when eyes don’t get as much light as we evolved getting.
I had a coworker that paid hundreds in the '90s for a video cassette series that boiled down to exactly that. Spend more time outside and squint until your vision is healed.
🤣
But according to that documentary, nearsightedness should die out, because the people that sit in dark rooms and read books all night instead of fucking around don’t procreate. So we might become idiots, but at least idiots without glasses.

So we just need to squint more?

Here’s a documentary for you
