My IR prof once half-joked that to understand IR, you have to frame everything as elementary schoolyard politics.

He was right. We are nuclear enabled children.

That is exactly what they mean.

Sanctions work less effectively the more they are used, and Biden already unleashed extreme sanctions against them in the starting days of the war.

It seriously fucked with their economy, which is why they then took steps to sanction-proof themselves.

Freedom from threats of US sanctions is a big part of the impetus of BRICS.

A big part of why they earn MORE from their gas now then before the war is India, a supposed ally and one that should be enforcing the sanctions but won’t because they’re not willing to commit economic suicide for the US.

Never assume your enemy is stupid or doesn’t get a say in how they respond to your attacks.

There was a bit from Soviet TV of early eighties. Rough translation of hosts words:

USSR is a big country, we’ll live with these sanctions just fine, but Washington’s allies will be hit from these “cowboy jumps” much harder.

So I’d say it’s always all good and stable for Russia until some certain point.

Russia (from my armchair) looks to be essentially a colony of China at this point, and China has most of a supply line that ignores western nations.

Except for tech, which they still have to steal from us.

      It’s bravado.

The reality is that Putin and his oligarchs hate sanctions. They’re not making that pronouncement for our benefit. Nothing they do is for our benefit.

Probably mean they can get their supply of stuff from china and south east asia. That’s the reason they can survive being sanctioned for so long since the war.

Russia started their invasion without walkie talkies or even gas for their trucks. And then international pressure got worse.

You like that your sons are living in squalor?

Compared to a nation of 32 million people? Fairly strong.

Compared to the EU? Weaker than a communist economy

Incredibly weak, but they have nukes and a psychopath at the helm. Not that hard to understand.

That’s all bluster. The EU should seize frozen oligarch assets and send most of the prceeds to Ukraine.
