I always feel these kinds of posts have the purpose of discouraging people to vote, because “both parties are the same”. Yet both parties are not exactly the same. In fact, we are witnessing the differences right now. One party is fascist, unconstitutional and doesn’t respect the law.

Lately there’s been a lot of memes that seem to instill distrust into political systems, definitely with the goal of getting people to not vote.

Tbf, our two party system is truly awful. We need to fight for a modern multiparty democracy with proportional representation

I suspect it’s both bad faith actors attempting to discourage voting (this only serves to help fascists) and naiive people who are, understandably, frustrated that their “left party” are basically useless or still trying to do neocon bullshit.

Then there’s the third secret thing. “Big brained” “centrists” who think they’re very clever and original.

Yes, earlier today user Cryptagion literally posted an anti-democracy statement and doubled down in the comments. They don’t want you to vote against the fascism, explicitly.

…but measurably less so. It’s like that trolley thing someone else posted where one side runs over a dense infinity, and another runner over another infinity at a less frequent integer.

Are both shit? Absofuckinlutely! But are both the same? Very clearly not.

It’s like having to choose between eating a salad or eating a turd, and exclaiming that they’re the same because you’re really not in the mood for salad… then giving a group of strangers the power to make that decision on your behalf… then feeling some weird sense of smugness for not participating while you’re being force-fed a turd.

Like, your heart’s in the right place - the whole system is fucked… But why not vote for the lesser and take action to burn this shit down? You can do both at the same time. That way you get whatever vision you’re shooting for, but with fewer brown people in cages, fewer women dying from getting pregnant in a red state, fewer Gazan children getting their arms blown off…

Zero is the number we want, but the options within our current system are some vs more. You can abstain, but all that’s doing is declining to nudge the outcome away from more - and when enough people do that, we get more of all that evil shit.

Okay, that’s fair. No one should be forced to vote for a genocide ever. And any system that tries to force people to vote for genocide to defeat fascism is not worth saving… But even on the issue of genocide, Democrats were the lesser evil. Democrats protested genocide while Republicans proudly cheer for it.

They didn’t do shit to protest it other than say they felt bad about still having to send Israel bombs while giving Ukraine a small handful of bullets and some flowers. Actions speak louder than words. If they actually cared, they’d give Israel nothing but the middle finger and give Ukraine and Palestine everything they want.

You’re missing an important facet of the lever here, bud. Flip it red and it accelerates. Flip it blue, it still runs, but it runs slower. We ultimately need to derail the thing, but if we can slow it down at all we have a moral obligation to.

Go learn about the politicians running for offices that affect you. Vote, and more importantly, talk to your peers about your neighborhood, city, and state governments. If we were more civically engaged as a population it would not have gotten this bad. You can’t slay a beast you refuse to look at.

Where’s the lever that derails the train?

Why do you help distract people from finding the derail lever by shaming them for not pulling the “kill more people” lever?

I’m not shaming anyone for trying to derail the trolley. I’m shaming them for pretending there’s no way to slow down the mayhem while they look for that permanent solution.

As far as the lever that derails the trolley, we haven’t found it in the over a century we’ve been aware it exists. It is somewhere, we will find it. But it is a very real possibility that you and I will not live to see it flipped. So for today, we drag individuals off the rails and slow the machine down where we can. Because it is what is clearly within our power. In those actions, we may find the lever. But we willsave lives.

        There’s no lever to derail.

There’s no reason to kill people quickly while you two to derail the trolley in the meantime.

Of course, now the trolley I’m guessing you’re referencing in the meme has the lever jammed to red, so either it doesn’t matter any more. The point is moot.

Yes and no. Yes, if everyone fought tirelessly for years to force our politicians to actually represent us then our system could be much better. But, our system is so deeply and unfathomably undemocratic / corrupt that it is cruel and unfair to put all the blame on the people. Humans are finite creatures so pouring more of our life into politics takes it from other aspects of our life. If everyone is over worked and exhausted then they often don’t have time for politics.

You’re not wrong, the ‘fight like hell’ approach would have worked if we applied it in the 1900’s-1930’s. In America, at least. Back before the cult of wealth was properly established and the average Joe still gave a shit about the poor and the needy.

Today, you can really only expect coordinated civic participation to be able to fix small local problems. Which is still absolutely necessary if we’re going to fix larger issues, because our neighbors will believe in the thing they see as putting food on their table and a roof over their head.

Even just working at the individual-to-individual level is still worthwhile. Bringing one person into the fold, protecting one person from harm at the hands of our economy, or at this point even just dragging one person out of fascism, makes an admirable comrade.

It’s a meme, not a political dissertation devoid of flaws. As such I find it hilarious. I’d still vote for the lesser evil while trying to help in other ways between elections.
