Many years ago, my mind shifted to the concept of a job being financial compensation for the life it takes from me. They exist to improve my ability to adventure and explore life further, and that’s a justified compensation or return on the time it takes away.

Even in a terrible job, it doesn’t matter. I’m just doing it so I can go enjoy things outside of it. If it doesn’t allow for that, it’s not compensating me enough; it’s a shitty deal and I’d prefer a period of hardship finding something else than continuing that pathway for an unforeseeable length of time.

Ironically, that mental shift got me into much higher paying jobs. My last four jobs were all offers. I haven’t applied for one since 2011. I can only put this down to my happiness resulting in better output, making me noticed in the industry.

Give it a go. Even if your job isn’t your passion, it’s should be fueling your passions with financial compensation. That, indirectly, makes working feel a lot better. Don’t get stuck in a one-sided abusive relationship with an employer that takes your life from you both inside and outside of work hours.
