  • Maybe people just don’t want this “thin client” inspired cloud shit that gives Microsoft or Google control of your data.
As the article mention, Chromebooks are also in decline, and good riddance!

It’s funny how Netbooks showed that Linux is a viable solution for small Arm devices, and works way better than Windows for it. But no vendor is making this for Arm, despite obvious advantages.

It may be a niche market initially, but so were smartphones before the iPhone and before they were called smartphones. And today smartphones are the biggest market in devices for consumer computing.

Netbooks were enjoying similar success, until they became loaded with the inferior Windows OS, that made them worse to actually use.

  • These correlations are mediated through several factors, including social media access, cyberbullying, disrupted sleep, and poor family relationships

Funny how 3 items are very specific, but it is not stated what about social media is so harmful?
Also as Lembot_0004 state, I think targeted advertising could be a big factor, and in EU and many countries that’s illegal to do against children.

leading to symptoms in adulthood that are not the traditional mental health symptoms of depression and anxiety and can be missed by studies using standard screeners. These symptoms of increased aggression, detachment from reality and suicidal thoughts

Sounds like those symptoms would be pretty standard to test for in a mental health evaluation.

I can’t help but get the feeling that this study was designed by an interest group. It somehow doesn’t ring true to me. Although the conclusion is pretty much as most would probably expect.
But maybe that’s the problem? The study shows exactly what most prejudiced against young people having smartphones would expect, and that could be caused by a flawed study.

  • This doesn’t make sense to me.
If you install features over time, it’s because you want to use them, if you want to use them, it’s not bloat.
If it’s to try it, and it’s not for you, why not just remove the package again?

I can’t say for others, but my system definitely does not get bloated over time.
On the contrary, I remove preinstalled features I don’t use, when I get tired of seeing them updating.
