RBWells@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How did you decide what you generally wanted to do with your life?27·3 days agoMy mom always said “you don’t need to know what you are doing for the rest of your life, just decide what you are doing for the next five years”.
Those men have not one ass between them, how are their pants staying up?
The sharpeners like that do a worse job than a good sharpening with a stone, but a better job than a half-assed sharpening with a stone (and really, which is more likely to happen on a weeknight?). I have knives from the restaurant, we used to get new ones weekly and send off last week’s to be sharpened, used a company Cozzini Knife Service - they aren’t designed to hold an edge as much as they are designed to be sharpenable. Have had one of them for almost 40 years now and I do run it through one of those pictured sharpeners pretty often if it’s not sharp sharp. Then wipe the edge, and hone, it works fine.

It’s not really a racial category, there are black Hispanic people, white Hispanic people, here it just means your family came from some Spanish speaking place. So the rich Cubans who came here were absolutely the “white people” of my youth. And historically, it’s those Spanish Conquistadores who put the Hispanic into the Americas in the first place.

(details inside) (**crosspost**)2·5 days agoCats are good pets for people who work, they sleep a lot in the day. I agree with zonetrooper that in this situation 2 cats would be better than one, though.
Yes if you get the cats a water fountain and automatic feeder, and have plenty of litter box space, they can be left a couple of days, and they prefer that to traveling. (Unlike a dog, who would rather go with you).
Talk to the shelter, they may know which individual cats in their care would be good for your situation.

So the average is 178. My sister is 178cm, I am 175. I guess that’s why I expected my daughters to be the average of our heights. My brothers are 188 cm. So all of us are in between the heights of the parents but there’s a lot of “in between”.
My mom’s parents were actually both quite tall though, her mom my height, which for back then was really tall, she (my mom) told me she kept expecting to get taller than her mom like the rest of her friends and it never happened.
And my dad’s parents were both quite short, about 165cm and all their kids as tall as my dad, so obviously there are other factors. I have no idea why my dad and his brothers were so tall. Like nearly a whole foot taller than both their parents.
An anecdote. My kid was injured, and we had neither health insurance or money. Got x-rays done at a chiropractor who did them for us for $25, to take to the emergency room, so that they didn’t do them there, because that would have cost 10x as much.
And yes comic is only funny here, I’m sure. But is pretty funny.
RBWells@lemmy.worldto Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•2.06 meters tall volleyball player Anna Smrek (1.60m man next to her for scale)2·5 days agoI was complaining that I thought my kids would all be my height or a little taller because my ex was a little bit taller than me, so should they not be the average of our heights?
My kid who did genetics in school says no, the average result is add mom and dads heights, divide by 2 but then add 10cm for boys, subtract 10cm for girls. So if I wanted girls my height I would need a man taller than me. And boy children would likely end up taller than either of us.
Obviously it’s not an unbreakable rule, but a likely result.
RBWells@lemmy.worldto Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•2.06 meters tall volleyball player Anna Smrek (1.60m man next to her for scale)4·5 days agoHa! I am probably old enough to be your mom and unfortunately for you my two straight daughters have partners. But worry not, medium height man of numbers. The benefit of being able to kiss without throwing my neck out, never having to move the seat in the car, I’m sure you can sell the benefits of same-height relationships to someone.
RBWells@lemmy.worldto Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•2.06 meters tall volleyball player Anna Smrek (1.60m man next to her for scale)4·6 days agoI am a 5’9" woman and prefer guys around my height, anecdotally all the women I know who want tall guys are themselves short.
It’s a weak preference but yeah I think since I go through life being around the same height as most guys I meet I don’t have such a strong association with height as a sex difference, if that makes sense.
RBWells@lemmy.worldto Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•2.06 meters tall volleyball player Anna Smrek (1.60m man next to her for scale)31·6 days agoThat’s a funny comment, but yeah - I’m the average height of men in my area, and like to be outmassed. I do like guys to be bigger than me in some dimension, and it hasn’t ever been height (tall guys here all seem to date short women). I have been about the same height as the guys of all my 3 serious relationships (not unusual since that’s the most common guy height) but have been the more slender of us always.

I was aghast to learn that my fellow parents at work track the location of their teenage kids. All of them, except me. What the fuck? If I want to know where they are I text and ask.
What’s more - half of them also have it turned on in the other direction.
This is crazy to me. I want my kids to grow into adults and I’m not going to surveil them all the time. I think a kid of teen age has some reasonable expectation of privacy. We are close, I have a good relationship with my kids but not THAT close, I don’t need to know if you stopped at Wawa on your way home.
I met a guy when I was that age, adult but not old. Friends, hung out with other people. The minute I turned 16 he asked me out. I declined and it was no big deal but who does that?
Zildjian is such a an old company still making the same thing. I don’t think cymbals changed much. People sell lutes on Etsy, those are an old style stringed instrument and flutes are so old too.
