This is the kind of thing that only those targeted for infiltration are likely to be aware of at the time. States still do domestic spying and infiltration of socialist groups, jail them, etc. In the UK, “Spy Cops” is a fairly recent discovery where the UK government had cops join socialist orgs undercover. They befriended people, got involved romantically, even had children before ghosting, having fulfilled their “mission”. Organizers of movements end up dead in surprising ways, with odd correlations. A conspicuous number of BLM organizers of Ferguson are now dead and I recommend looking into that.

One thing to consider is that these programs essentially worked, or at least anticommunism won through its various methods, not just terrorists. Europe has no substantial communist movements any longer outside of maybe Greece and Serbia. In most Euro places any inkling is oppressed by the liberal state apparatus and they target small groups that do things like read or protest genocide or help people unionize.

There are places where communist agitation is more active and the state violence and terrorism is greater there. The most active are Maoists like in India and The Philippines and the states there routinely arrest and murder them, generally for siding with indigenous people that want to secure their land against mining and other exploitative interests. Many are martyred for this work.

I don’t know enough about the red scare to really comment on it. McCarthyism didn’t really happen in my country as much as it did in the US.

Coopting and infiltration of labour movements were partly responsible, but more so outsourcing/global competition (as you mention) and changes in dominant economic sectors played a big role too.

The fact that outsourcing could even happen is already an indication of weak unions. In this case, weak unions coopted into the liberal legal order.

On top of that retirement of former union members - those that saw what the benefits of unions were first hand - also cut down union interest gave corporations more power.

Meaning the unions progressively lost their militancy, the left having been purges for liberals and against class consciousness and solidarity.

It’s less obvious but can see how the Nordic countries fall in line with imperialist structures. I’ll expound a bit but it is not in any way in disagreement.

The nordic countries lend weight to unequal IP restrictions and dollarization and the IMF, they never do anything material against imperialist wars (they actually want a piece of the pie by providing arms), and now that they are accepting their role as NATO pawns they are increasing their military budgets, cutting the welfare state, and allowing their fascistic political foemations to thrive while suppressing the left. They all openly tolerate “Israeli” genocidal fascism and even carry water for their project against domestic dissidents. Nordic countries are deeply embedded in global capital monopoly, the engine of imperialism, whether it is Norway as a petrostate or shipping logistics like in Sweden and Denmark. And they do not do this reluctantly and with policy against imperialist aims. Internally, they are fanning the flames against POC immigrants as the big scapegoat for why their lives are materially deteriorating - not their own state’s willing deindustrialization or cuts to services.

To put it simply, they are liberals. They briefly were the selective snapshot of “successful” liberalism if you didn’t peek behind the curtain of global exploitation (who grew that “luxurious” pineapple and what were they paid!?). The global financial system propped up states in their region as a means by which to oppose communists, as if communists were there to steal your children or do the genocides that imperialists constantly engaged in. That system is no longer intentionally doing this, it is neoliberal and there is no communist current in Europe. We now watch it decay into the hallmarks of fascism. The empire is pulling back its subsidies, reversing them, and all of “Europe” is collaborating for how to react to this in the worst possible way.

They did not do an about-face because Joe Rogan told them to. The left was systematically dismantled through the red scare, including the purging and cooption of unions into the liberal state establishment. Robbed of class struggle and solidarity, unionized industries could actually be weaponized against workers’ movements and then later, weakened by cooption and fraternizibg with management, dismantled through offshoring with no coercive resistance.

The people today are the dispossessed and are as miseducated on this as yourself. Having no correct information by which to understand their position, they will replace it with things like, sure, Joe Rogan, but really they mostly fill their heads with self-blaming liberalism and acceptance with the usual reactionary thinking that the ruling class amplifies to secure its positions. Something you are surely not immune to, either.
