Fallout!
Imo this was the single best adaption of not just a video game to a show but any media series to a different format. It absolutely nailed the lore, vibe, and mechanics of the game without having to make sacrifices or changes for storytelling and told an excellent new story that fits perfectly within the existing canon. You could literally recreate that show in game (and some dedicated fans probably are).
The Expanse says hi.
The Fallout series was pretty good, but it wasn’t perfect. They took a lot of unnecessary liberties with the lore.
Too many characters have ties to the real world, which goes against the core ideals of what the Fallout universe was about. The past is the past, and the current shitty present is what it is. You might have stories and log entries about what happened in the past, but there’s not supposed to be survivors trying to push their agenda back unto the new world. Even the ghouls are just trying to survive, not trying to live out some notation of what they lost. The series was really pushing this narrative around Vault-Tek causing the war, and creating this cabal, just for research purposes, and given all of the creature comforts that the rich were used to, it smacks me as horribly unrealistic that they would agree to give all of that shit up to be leaders in a fucked up post-apocolytical world.
Sure, they would be overambitious enough to accidentally get into a war with China for one thing or another, but let’s not pretend that even billionaires of today would purposely give up their billions over a gamble like that. Also, I didn’t watch Fallout to see half the series musing about what happened before the bombs fell.
I think if the series stopped attaching themselves with the past and just embraced the current problems of the Fallout universe, it would work a lot better.
“given all of the creature comforts that the rich were used to, it smacks me as horribly unrealistic that they would agree to give all of that shit up to be leaders in a fucked up post-apocolytical world.”
The ultra rich today are feeding the flames of climate change to wring out every last bit of wealth they can. They are preparing bunkers and private islands for themselves, apparently under the impression that their billions will protect them when everything goes to shit. Unfortunately, the powerful fools in the Fallout show seem pretty realistic to me.
That being said, I get what you’re saying about wanting to see more of the interesting stuff going on after the bombs dropped. I think the Sandy Shores twist worked well, but it’s a shame we didn’t get to see how it developed to that point. I hope that season 2 will explore a different angle to what we’ve already seen in season 1.
