Nah, this is dumb even by their standards. They think the North Pole is in the center of the disc.

You’ve got to look at a more-accurate map projection like pilots and ship captains do. This one makes it more obvious, it’s just easier to get momentum and roll into Alaska due to the strange facts of geography.

They forget that the Earth is spinning east to west so the planes don’t really need to go anywhere, they just need to hover and wait for the Earth to spin enough.

first - LOL. Second - there are so many really dumb people out there you could say that with a straight face and they would readily nod in agreement.

Are we talking the modern use of special, or the old use of special? Because they sure aren’t the first one.

Just checked a globe. Moscow to Anchorage goes pretty much straight north through Murmansk and the North Pole. Surprisingly similar distance as DC to Anchorage, slightly longer.

Flying straight over the arctic is a great idea (for Putin and Trump only).

I once had a flat-earther use this as an argument that the earth must be flat. “if the earth was round, why don’t they fly over the arctic?”

I don’t know the flight path, but it may be easier to cross the ocean going West from Moscow or St Petersburg than going over Siberia with the wild fires and volcanic activity in Vladistock area?

    Edit: Context https://www.cbsnews.com/news/krasheninnikov-volcano-russia-erupts/

    https://www.cnn.com/2025/05/14/europe/russia-wildfires-rage-siberia-region-intl-latam

And yes the wildfires from May are still not under control.

The shortest distance between Moscow and anywhere in the US is actually just to go straight over the north pole, which is of course not particularly intuitive when looking at a flat map. Since that’s the case, the farther south in the US you are aiming for, the longer it takes

Alaska was actually also ‘given’ to USA (sold for not much) just like Crimea was.
