Progenitor of the Weird Knife Wednesday feature column. Is “column” the right word? Anyway, apparently I also coined the Very Specific Object nomenclature now sporadically used in the 3D printing community. Yeah, that was me. This must be how Cory Doctorow feels all the time these days.

  • The lever thingy is called the spoon, and in reality it is spring loaded so heavily that there are two rather major caveats with this (trust internet pedantry to come along and ruin everything):

    1. There is no way the bird would have the strength be able to pull the pin out, since the spring force exerted on the spoon also wedges it against the pin, which is what keeps the pin from being snagged and pulled out accidentally.

    2. If the bird did manage to get the pin out anyway, with the spoon resting on the ground like that the spring force would be sufficient to pop the grenade several inches off the ground when it pinged off and probably yeet that one ounce bird clear into the bushes in the process.

  • When I was a kid I relied on my bicycle to get around and I was simply too poor to pay anyone to work on it for me. It was all I could do to afford the bike itself in the first place. So with some experimentation and slowly buying (or filching) the tools I learned to do it myself.

I’ve since graduated to motorcycles, but the philosophy is the same.

I’m not broke anymore but that’s not the point. Teaching yourself to be helpless will get you every time. Whenever you say, “I can’t do whatever,” you’ll inevitably prove yourself right. Sometimes you’ll get yourself into a pickle, sure, but more often than not you’ll prevail. And the more you prevail the better you’ll get at it.

  • Firefox also now has “copy clean link” when you right click the url bar which also works great.

I am an avid and exclusive user of Firefox and I never discovered this because it never would have occurred to me in a million years to right click the URL bar for any reason. So I’ll be damned; there it is. (I always just lasso the relevant part myself and hit ctrl + c.)

  • Speaking as someone who delivered a lot of pizza in a previous life, I can confirm that after being exposed to enough bullshit from customers plus the constant threat of getting jumped and robbed (even from idiots who claimed they were “just joking around”), us delivery drivers absolutely were ready to throw down at any instant, for just about any reason. The counter staff probably less so.

Two dipshits arguing with each other in my lobby (i.e. not arguing with us) wouldn’t be one of them, though. That’s how you can tell this is fake. I’d have just tossed both of them out on their asses and ate whoever’s pizza it was that just got canceled. Deliverator don’t give a fuck what your problem is.

I could write a book on the ways people found out after fucking around in the various restaurants I worked at. The statute of limitations has probably come up by now…

  • You can already auto sort in vanilla with a sufficiently byzantine arrangement of hoppers. It’s not very space efficient, but you can indeed do it.

If I still played Minecraft I would probably be more interested in a Terraria style “throw all loot automatically at nearby chests” button than a dedicated sorting block, but given that Microsoft has displayed a dogged insistence on not giving a rat’s ass about what the player base actually wants I would not hold your breath for that one.

He has a point, though, just not articulated as well as it could be. Someone is being a bit cheeky with this image, because those are two different classes of trucks, not just different models.

The one in front I believe is a 2nd gen (1998-2000) Toyota Tacoma which is a classed as a compact pickup. The one in the rear is a Ford F-250 Super Duty which isn’t even meant to be their consumer pickup truck; it’s a very definitely classed as a full sized pickup with its own heavy duty chassis and isn’t even based on the F-150 anymore. Everyone and their dog does indeed drive an F-150 but not as many people are just running around in an F-250 just for the hell of it.

A less disingenuous comparison would be the old Tacoma in the front and a current Tacoma in rear. Trying to compare old and new Super Duties would probably be futile; those have always been huge.
